How do we make our sailing trips sustainable?

Since our founding, we have been deeply committed to the topic of sustainable tourism. For Carl, our founder, this issue is especially close to his heart. As a father of two, he wants to show his children the world as unspoiled and beautiful as he has been able to experience it himself. Privately, he also lives by this conviction, having long since traded the family car for a bicycle, which he uses to commute to work every day, rain or shine.

For us, sustainable water tourism means combining unforgettable experiences on the water with active environmental protection. The tourism sector is one of the largest industries in the world – and with that comes great responsibility. Plastic pollution, especially on beaches and in bays, not only diminishes the attractiveness of travel destinations but also impacts the entire ecosystem. This becomes evident time and again on our sailing trips.

How can you also travel sustainably on our sailing trips? You’ll find some helpful tips at the following link!

With strong partners and big goals

Sustainability has been a major motivator from the very beginning. It was therefore clear that the topic of sustainability would also be implemented at sailwithus. In principle, joining a sailing trip on a yacht with a skipper is already very resource-friendly thanks to wind power as the primary means of propulsion. Since 2020, we have been a member of Forum anders Reisen e.V., an umbrella association for sustainability in tourism in German-speaking countries. The association advocates for sustainable tourism and supports tour operators in organizing and carrying out their trips in an environmentally responsible way.

In active exchange with stakeholders in the destination region

But it’s not only the environment that matters to us – it’s also the local people. The restaurants, leisure activities, shops, and hotels we recommend are run by local owners and offer regional products. This way, we support the local economy and partners through long-term cooperation and regular exchange.

One good turn deserves another

It is precisely this exchange that allows us to move away from mass tourism and share with you as fellow sailors many insider tips that you won’t find in any guidebook. We are convinced that this kind of tourism is beneficial—not only for your experience of a sailing holiday but also for building a fair relationship with the locals. This way, a trusted and friendly connection with the people on site can be fostered. Nature and wildlife will thank us for it. Of course, we place great importance on respecting natural reserves where marine and coastal species nest and settle.

Reaching the goal together with awareness

We also strive to raise awareness among our customers about the wide range of sustainable practices. For example, on the yachts, it is always necessary—also for practical reasons—to save water and electricity whenever possible. You can find more information about everyday life on board in our sailing holiday FAQs.

Since wastewater from showers is sometimes discharged directly into the sea, we always recommend bringing microplastic-free shampoos and soaps. On some of our trips, we also provide these in cooperation with our partner Benecos.

Our mission: reducing plastic

We are part of the International Tourism Plastic Pledge initiative and are joining forces with strong partners to work towards a plastic-free tourism industry!

The tourism sector is one of the largest industries in the world, and with that comes great responsibility. Plastic pollution, especially on beaches and in bays, has a negative impact on the attractiveness of tourist destinations. We can observe this time and again on our sailing trips.

It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. That’s why we have recognized the urgency and express our commitment with the Green Ahoi – Plastic Trip. For one week, the skipper and the entire yacht are dedicated to saving the world’s oceans. Every day, the mission is clear: working together to free our beloved beaches from plastic.

Setting goals together

The goals of the International Tourism Plastic Pledge, which we actively support and have committed ourselves to, are:

  • Raising awareness of this issue within the industry itself, as well as in the destinations and among our customers
  • Taking measures such as reuse and recycling
  • Exchange of knowledge

We believe that every plastic item on the trip that we and you replace with an alternative makes a big difference, and that the environmentally friendlier substitute products we suggest help reduce the impact. By raising awareness of this issue, we aim to support you before, during, and after the trip!

Together for the future

Preserving the purity of the sea is one of the most important factors for sailwithus as a tour operator. Protecting our most popular travel destination is a given, but we go beyond that by considering not only our sailing trips but also all accompanying aspects, such as travel to the destination and the booking process.

To counteract climate change and reduce our footprint, we offer the option to offset the CO² emissions of our trips in cooperation with atmosfair.
